Winter is settling in, more so than we expected when we chose to move to northeast Florida last year. The big cold spell that's enveloped so much of our nation has spread even down to our parts. Local weathermen say we might have snow flurries tomorrow afternoon. I guess I don't mind that, just as long as it doesn't turn into something we have to shovel! I'd be happy to just see rain.

I think of it as a large group of friends who gather weekly to visit and exchange opinions in a non-threatening atmosphere where we are genuinely interested in what people think. It's like taking a reading on where people stand on the issues.
1. It's that time of year again ... time for Lake Superior University to present a list of words (or phrases) they'd like to see banished (for over-use, mis-use, or genera uselessness) in 2018. You can read more about the decision making process and word meaning here, but this year's top vote getters are--
unpack, dish (as in dish out the latest rumor), pre-owned, on boarding/offboarding, nothing burger, let that sink in, let me ask you this, impactful, Covfefe, drill down, fake news, hot water heater (hot water doesn't need to be heated), and gig economy
Which of these words/phrases would you most like to see banished from everyday speech and why? Is there a word not on the list you'd like to add?
What would I like to see banished? I would like to see all crude, obscene, and profane words deleted entirely.
2. What's something you need to get rid of in the new year?
Since we have moved twice in the past four years, I like to dispose of the extra stuff that tends to accumulate and get forgotten in closets. No matter how much I purge, there always seems to be more that should go.
3. Where do you feel stuck?
Thankfully, I don't feel stuck right now.
4. January is National Soup Month. When did you last have a bowl of soup? This past Sunday night.
Was it made from scratch or from a can? It was Campbell's Chicken with Rice.
Your favorite canned soup? Campbell's Tomato Soup made with 1 cup of coconut milk.
Your favorite soup to make from scratch on a cold winter's day? I like to make chicken soup from scratch. During my recent bout with a cold, Sue urged me to eat chicken soup, which she referred to as "Jewish Penicillin." (it definitely helped)
5. Tell us one thing you're looking forward to in 2018.
My eldest grandson will be graduating from high school this spring. He has been homeschooled all his life. While he will be honored at a big ceremony for homeschooled graduates from all over the state, it's his mother who should also be recognized for her endurance and diligence to all the details necessary to teach, discipline, and prepare her children for life.
6. Insert your own random thought here.
This is a metal trivet hanging on a wall in my kitchen. I bought it at Hobby Lobby to both fill an empty space on the wall and to also remind me how beneficial a very hot liquid can be when I wake during the wee hours of the morning with sinus pressure and a sore throat.
Before reaching for medicines, I've learned to first prepare a HOT mug of water (mine comes from the Keurig, or you can use the microwave, but make sure it's just this side of burn-your-tongue-HOT). Add a tea bag if you want, but the point is to breathe in the hot steam through the nostrils and mouth and to sip the liquid slowly but before it cools so it can flow over the throat.
Many times this was all I needed to do to moisten those uncomfortable dry and inflamed tissues that woke me up, and to feel comforted enough to fall back asleep.
It's the season for colds and flu.
